"Behold, I am a disciple of Jesus Christ, the Son of God. I have been called of him to declare his word among his people, that they might have everlasting life."

Mormon doctrine

Ben hasn't written much interesting lately. He was disappointed that he wasn't transferred, but that's all. Here's something else he said and a few pictures to fill the void:

"There are some ridiculous things people say...One lady said, "I've studied all about the Mormons. I don't like their doctrines." When my companion asked what she studied, she said, "I watched the Southpark episode on Mormons" and she was totally serious. Some people are crazy."

Happy Mother's Day!

Happy Mother's Day! Good to see you. How's life? How are the youngsters treating you? ...[Ben wrote nice things to his mama here] I probably will never know [all that you sacrificed for me] but I really want to thank you so much. Without your stubborness ways, I don't think I would be here today. Even tho I was practically the most behaved...he he. I'm just kidding. 75% of your grey hairs are from me. It's good for you tho, gives you grit, makes you stronger...[more nice things] I was going to send a gift, but I looked forever (25 mins. at Food 4 Less) and the only thing I found worth sending, I am now eating. My bad. All is well here. The days are long and hot, and they still won't let me sleep in. That's ok, I'll forgive them. We are teaching a lot of lessons, but only a few are slightly interested, and of them, 1 or 2 let us come back. We do have 3 baptismal dates, and we got them all last week. One is Enos (see email for reference). He is way cool, he's like 26 and has been here as long as I have. Hopefully he will stick it out and get a dunking. The other two, Eileen and her daughter Jenna, the Lizarragas, are having a rough time with her ex-husband, but we set a baptismal date on Jenna's 10th birthday! They are both really excited, which is good, because Eileen's family is Catholic (who isn't?) and isn't supporting her at all, quite the opposite. They're really nice tho, I like them, too. We're going to try to get one with this lady, Maria Elena Martinez. She is the sweetest lady. Gas and milk are ridiculously expensive, but every time we visit her she gives us milk and bread, and tons of stuff like fruit, cereal, bagels, all that. It's so much food, but it's good. She is also a dang good cook. There are some Latinos here that make the best food I've ever eaten. We ate with one lady who made such good tamales and taquitos that it was probably the first time I wanted to cry because I couldn't eat more. They give so much food. She made like a ton of it, and they want us to eat it all or they think that it's no good. If only I could eat more...As you can see, they're taking care of me very well, so don't worry. Tell everyone hello for me.

At last...

5/5/08
howdy folks. hope all is well. i was told yesterday, on sunday, by one of the members that it looks like i had lost weight. i knew i was chubby after the mtc but i didnt know it was that bad. she said it was something about my pants that tipped her off... thats good tho, that im getting unchubby. so this week, i went on splits with my district leader, and we were teaching this guy from honduras. he moved here the week before we first met him, and we actually came to talk to someone else in the apartment. there is a husband and a wife, plus 4 other people staying there. we came to see the wife, but ended up teaching one of the friends, his name is enos. it was really weird how it happened that we found him because we didnt even really teach him the first time, but the second time on he was the only one we taught. last week my dl and i challenged him to be baptized and he accepted! hes very intelligent for a latin, meaning nothing bad, but when you teach these people, you say, joseph smith wanted to knw which church he should join, and then you ask right after that, what was his question, they think for a second... no no no se (i dont know). its ridiculously frustrating. but enos, when we leave him a chapter, reads it like 10 times and practically memorized it. we had him read the BoM intro, and he told us about it the next visit 2 days later and he told us the story perfectly with all dates correct and everything. it was cool. he had just moved from honduras a week when we met him, and he was looking for a way to change his life around, its a cool story.

we were knocking doors one day and we came up to a door just like normal, we had knocked on a lot of them in that complex, so we just went on to the next one, so we knocked on one door, and a lady answered it. before we said anything, she said, who sent you? how do you know im here? which was trippy, but we later found out that a few days before, her son in guatemala had called her and said he was going to send missionaries to her. it turns out she is a member, but has been less active for 15 years, and we just showed up a few days after that phone call with her son. there have been a lot of cool things like that. its cool to here someone say, whether its a member or not 'its weird you stopped by here today' it happens a lot more than i thought. we started talking to this one lady, and she turned out to be a raging alcoholic. she was so messed up, she just drank all day without realizing it, so we helped her enter detox, and when she gets out shes going to call us. there are a lot of crazy people around here too, i like it. we visited this one lady who isnt active, and we talked to her, and when we asked her to come to church, she said no, just flat out, no games, no. same with reading and same with praying. yesterday, i saw her at church. my companion was in the other ward at the time, but i started talking to her and she had changed a little, she was a lot nicer, told me we could come visit whenever we wanted, all that, which was a 180 turn for her. hmm, lots of other people. when members fall, they do it for the dumbest reasons, and they just use those as an excuse to not come to church for years. we have visited people who have been less active for 65ish years one lady said, and the reason was because they asked her to help teach primary. dumb stuff like that (ill admit, i wouldnt want to teach it either, but come on). shilo sent me an email, sounds cool. ill call you guys on sunday, im thinking at 4pm our time (thats 5pm for you landlubbers). ill have 45 minutes to chat, so i guess see you then
